Your King Cometh!

Luke 19:28 – 48.

Since becoming a Christian in Easter of 1969, I have heard, or brought a message on the triumphal entry into Jerusalem every year.  So that would be 45 years.  I never get tired of hearing it or speaking it.  It is the one time Jesus allows His followers to praise Him openly.

This morning we are ready for chapter 19 vs 28, of Luke.

Luk 19:28-48  And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

·         Now it is important to remember what He had just spoken.

·         The parable of the ten minas.  And we determined from this parable that Jesus has given each of us a certain degree of talents, and He expects us to use them for His glory, and the edification of the church.  Also, the stern warning to those who will not accept His authority over them.  “Bring them before Me, and slay them.” A very strong rebuke.

·         And in the previous chapter 18, He had told them again of His trials to come in Jerusalem.

·         Now, He will enter Jerusalem as the conquering hero to His followers, but end up on Calvary’s dreaded cross.

(29)  And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,  (30)  Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.  (31)  And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.  (32)  And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.  (33)  And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?  (34)  And they said, The Lord hath need of him.  (35)  And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.

·         This action fulfills the prophecy of Zec. 9:9;  Zec 9:9  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

·         In the eyes of some, this may be a small, and insignificant event, but Jesus used it to fulfil Scripture, it was important to Him, and for us.

·         And again, He didn’t get a huge, expensive, parade, with all the well to do people of that time, but the poor, and less thought of people in the social realm.  These were the ones that recognized, that He had come from God to help the people.  They received Him gladly.

(36)  And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.  (37)  And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

·         They began to rejoice, and praise God, WITH A LOUD voice, for all the mighty works that they had seen:

·         The dead raised, the lame healed, the lepers cleansed, and the blind eyes opened.  There’s a neat song out that says, “if you don’t believe me, ask the blind man he saw it all.”

(38)  Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.  (39)  And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.  (40)  And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

·         Jesus is saying, that it is only right for them to praise Me like this, for Who I Am.   And you know what this also does?  They will remember, and it will ring in their ears at His crucifixion, That He is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, and the very Son of God.

(41)  And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,  (42)  Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.  (43)  For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,  (44)  And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

·         In His most glorious time on earth, He found a need to weep.

·         This same Spirit that was in Jesus is in His followers today, and we should still be weeping at the sight of all the people that satan is sifting like wheat.  The world is lost, and hell bound, and they don’t seem to realize it, or don’t care, one or the other.

·         This prophecy that the Lord gives on the destruction of Jerusalem, is carried out by the Roman General Titus, in the year AD. 70.  27 years after Jesus spoke it.  It was carried out to the very letter of the prophecy.

AND WHEN HE REACHED JERUSALEM, (45)  And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;  (46)  Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

·         Jesus quotes Scripture;  Isa 56:7  Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

·         And fulfills Scripture;  Psa 69:9  For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

·         And this did nothing but hasten Him toward Calvary.  He knew it would.  It upset the religious leaders of that time to the point of wanting Him killed no matter the cost.

(47)  And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,  (48)  And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

·         His teachings are still taught in His church today.  The world, which is run by satan, still doesn’t like it, and does everything he can to stop it.  God is allowing so much to happen, and satan knows that by following the Lord’s teachings, that mankind will inherit eternal life, and even in this life be rewarded greatly.  Things are coming to an end quickly.

·         They sought to destroy Him, but could not find what they might do.  Well, they eventually do.

THEN NOTICE:

All the people were very attentive to hear Him.

·         One of the great truisms is that like produces like.  People that are born of His Spirit still hunger for His Word, and teachings.  When these are accepted, and received, it produces more Christians, or followers of Jesus.

Remember what Jesus said, “ Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”  In other words, we should strive to obey every word of God, this should be our ultimate goal in this life.

Almighty God, as we see this wonderful, life changing event, unfold before our very eyes, help us to realize what a terrible price was paid for our salvation, and increase our love for you, for it.
