Just To Touch The Hem Of His Garment

October 13, 2013
Morning Service

We have just finished teaching on what we teach.  Greg has been leading a study in the book of Luke on Sunday evenings, and Wednesday evenings.  Since this is the one book we haven’t studied for a while, actually since 1990, we will stay with this study until finished.

Dr. Luke, who also wrote the book of Acts, was a native of Antioch of Syria.  He was a gentile, and there is no record concerning his conversion to Christianity.  He hooked up with Paul at Troas, according to Acts 16.  He was not eye witness to the Lord’s ministry, but assured us in the opening chapter of Luke, that he understood everything very clearly.

·         Luk 1:1-4  Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,  (2)  Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;  (3)  It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,  (4)  That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Greg, and Sam have gotten us to Luke chapter 8:40, and that’s where we are this morning.

Things to remember as we study;

Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.   We need faith.

Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.   ( so we can build our faith by hearing, and studying the Word of God.)

Joh 20:30-31  And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:  (31)  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

So we believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, Word of God.  Just as Paul tells Timothy;

2Ti 3:15-17  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  (16)  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  (17)  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Peter said; 2Pe 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

AND OUR KNOWLEDGE OF HIM COMES FROM THE BIBLE.

So far in this 8th chapter of Luke we have seen;

1.       How that certain women that He had touched, and healed, ministered, and supported his ministry.

2.      Jesus taught the parable of the sower.  Wayside, rocky, thorns, good.

3.      Jesus taught the parable of the lamp.

4.      Then He spoke of His true brethren.  “My Mother, and brothers are these that hear and do the Word of God.”

5.      Then we saw Him still a storm.  “who is this that even the winds, and water obey Him.”

6.      Then we saw Him cast the demons out of a man named Legion, because he had many demons.  He cast them into the swine that were feeding in that area, and they ran off into the sea, and drowned.  This so scared the community that they came out, and ask Him to leave from them.

The man that healed wanted to go with Jesus, and His disciples, but Jesus told him to stay at home and tell what great things God had done for him.      TESTIMONY.

This is a really great lesson for us.  When Jesus has done something for us, let your community know by the life you live.  WHAT A WITNESS.

Let’s begin:

Luk 8:40-48  And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.  (41)  And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:  (42)  For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.  (43)  And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,  (44)  Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.  (45)  And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

(46)  And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.  (47)  And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.  (48)  And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

·         These type of stories always leap out at me.  Jairus was concerned about his dying little girl.  Why can’t we be as concerned about our little girls, and boys, that this world is killing?  Just as Jairus was trying to get Jesus to come into his house, and heal her, we should be getting Jesus into all the houses, and schools we can, so He can heal our kids.  Without Him they don’t stand a chance.  We have got to keep our children at the feet of Jesus.  Where there is love, & peace.

·         But as this story goes, as Jesus is on His way to Jairus’s house, and lots of people were going with them, a woman, who had been sick for twelve years, came up and touched Him, and immediately she was healed.

·         She had a tremendous need, and she knew that if she could get to Jesus He could heal her.

·         I’m telling you, if we can get people to the cross of Calvary, and let them reach out and touch Jesus He will still heal them of their sickness.   There are so many today that are bound by satan through bad habits, possessions, and things, that keep them from a life with God.

·         We serve a mighty God.  The Hebrew said, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.”  He is the same healer today as He was then, but as He told His disciples “Joh 16:7  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”  Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to live in the lives of His followers, to guide, strengthen, and guide us into all truth.

·         We understand that Jesus was very man, and very God.  He knew all things, and all hearts, just as He does today.

·         And when the woman saw that she was not hid, came trembling, and falling down before Him, confessing before everyone why, and what she had done.

·         Is that not what we need to do today?  If we could only get people to see the need for a savior.  But I heard a fellow say one time, that America was gospel hardened.  Most have lost their fear of God, no trembling, no humility of falling at His feet, and certainly not willing to confess their sins to Him.  The world is just like those people that ask Him to leave, after healing the man of the many demons.

·         But notice the results that these actions brought.  She was healed immediately, and received words of comfort from the Master.  Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

This is exactly what Jesus wants to do for everyone.  He wants us to experience the joy of being healed, and having our sins forgiven.  To enter into a world of peace, and love where He is the King of King, and Lord of Lords.

Almighty God, help us to say the right things, to do the right things, so that the sick, and dying will want to come to you for help.   Amen.
