Review: 1. In chapter 17 we saw Jesus praying for Himself, His immediate disciples, and then He prayed for those that would believe on Him through the Apostles witness. That’s us! 2. He is preparing them for His leaving them, and going back to the Father.
In chapter 18 we find; The arrest of Jesus. Joh 18:1-11 KJVR When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. (2) And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. (3) Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. (4) Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? (5) They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. (6) As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. (7) Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. (8) Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: (9) That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. (10) Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. (11) Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? · One friend betraying Him, and the other ready to fight to the death for Him. · THE CUP WHICH MY FATHER HAS GIVEN ME, SHALL I NOT DRINK IT? · When I ponder this statement I think of the cup that we have been given to drink. It is following the Lord’s teaching every hour of the day. SHALL I NOT DRINK IT? · Jesus told satan on the mount “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” · In Matt. Chapters 5-7, Jesus pretty well sums up His teachings, and some of them we haven’t done to well on. But we keep trying and one day we will get it right. The first Jewish trial before Annas. Vs’s 12-23; · In chapter 13 Jesus told Peter that he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed. Here in this portion of Scripture is the first. Joh 18:15-17 KJVR And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. (16) But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. (17) Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. · Peter just earlier this night was ready to fight unto death, now he denies Him. · People need not look to harshly on Peter, because there are many Christians that ride the fence. This doesn’t make them not Christians, just not obedient Christians. Second Jewish trial before Caiaphas. Joh 18:24-27 KJVR Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. (25) And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. (26) One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? (27) Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. · Here we see the second, and third denial from Peter. · As I said earlier, we need not look to harshly at Peter. Just a little while back Jesus taught us to remove the beam from our eye so we could see clearly to help someone clean the speck from their eye. · Now the thing about these denials, is that once Peter is filled with the Holy Ghost there is no more denials, mistakes, yes, but no denials. Even to his being crucified upside down on a cross. · You see, the same is true for you and I, once we are filled with the Holy Ghost, there will be no denials, mistakes, yes, but no denials. Plus overcoming power. · Remember, you have not because you ask not. You can have just as much of the Spirit of God, as you are willing to pay the price for, and that price is dying out to this ole world, and living a life of obedience to the Word of God.
First Roman trial before Pilate. Joh 18:28-38 KJVR Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. · Here again the Jews showing their hypocricy. To go into the house of a gentile would defile them according to their laws. Then they would not be able to eat the passover meal. Yet even while thinking this way their hearts are filled with hatred, and malice toward an innocent man, Jesus. Even wanting Him put to death. · Jesus told them one time; Mat 23:23-28 KJVR Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (24) Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. (25) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. (26) Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. (27) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. (28) Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (29) Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? (30) They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. (31) Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: (32) That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. (33) Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? (34) Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? · You see it’s one thing to call Jesus King of Kings, and Lord of Lords from the heart, another to just repeat what someone else has said. (35) Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? (36) Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. · With this statement in mind, were all the wars that have been fought in the name of religion right? He just told Peter to put up his sword. Jesus practiced what He preached. Turn the other cheek? Read the book. (37) Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. (38) Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. · TO THIS END WAS I BORN! 1Ti 6:13-15 KJVR I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; (14) That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: (15) Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; · John on the isle of Patmos, while writing the Revelations from God, saw this; Rev 17:14 KJVR These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
