Morning Service
St.Jn. 5:1-15
Review:
- In the beginning of the Gospel of John, we see
John’s testimony concerning the divinity of Jesus.
- Then we see the
witness of John the Baptist, the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove, then
Andrew, Philip, and last Sunday we saw the witness of the Samaritan woman
at the well, and then the Samaritans themselves, Joh 4:40-42 KJVR So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him
that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. (41) And many more believed because of his
own word; (42) And said unto the woman, Now we
believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed
the Christ, the Savior of the world.
- Hopefully that’s why
you are here this morning, you have heard Him for yourselves, and know
indeed that Jesus is the Christ, the very Son of God. This is Who we commune with each and
every time we open this Holy Bible, the Word of God, Who was made flesh,
and dwelt among us.
- And just as the
Galileans received Him, we want to receive Him this morning, to have His
way in this service, as we glorify His Holy Name.
- The last act that we
saw Jesus do in chapter 4 was to heal the Nobleman’s son. Jesus spoke the Word, and his son was
healed. The key here is that the
Nobleman BELIEVED the Word of the Lord, and his son was
healed. This is the key. Not just hearing, but believing, and
receiving. Jesus said, Mat 21:21-22 KJVR Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. (22) And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
So let’s
build our faith this morning by hearing, and receiving the Word of God. Chapter 5.
Joh 5:1-21 KJVR After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem. (2) Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew
tongue Bethesda, having five porches. (3) In these
lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for
the moving of the water. (4) For an
angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water:
whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole
of whatsoever disease he had. (5) And a
certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. (6) When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had
been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? (7) The
impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to
put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before
me. (8) Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. (9) And immediately the man was made whole, and
took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
- Remember Jesus said,
“it is an evil, and adulterous generation that seeks after a sign. We do not seek a sign, for we know what
the Scripture says, Joh 20:30-31 KJVR And many other signs truly did Jesus in
the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: (31) But these are written, that ye might
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye
might have life through his name.
- No, we don’t seek a
sign, but we will trust the Lord for the things we need, and sometimes
healing is one of the things we need. Heb. 8:28; Jesus Christ
the same yesterday, today, and forever. James said you have not because you ask not. Remember what Jesus said, “and all
things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Ask yourself, do I believe it, will I
receive it? Lord help us to
receive this engrafted Word that is able to save our souls.
- Another thing
concerning this miracle. Jesus
came to this man, there were many there, but Jesus singled out this
individual. He could have healed
them all, but the Word doesn’t tell us He did. When He comes to you, let Him have His way with you. Receive Him.
(10) The Jews
therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful
for thee to carry thy bed. (11) He answered them, He that made me whole, the
same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. (12) Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy
bed, and walk? (13) And he that was healed wist not who it was:
for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
- These Jews considered
this a sin, carrying his bed around with him on the Sabbath; Exo 31:12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily
my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. Exo 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it
shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off
from among his people. Exo 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the
seventh is the sabbath of rest,
holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Exo 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their
generations, for a perpetual
covenant. Exo
31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of
Israel forever: for in six days
the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was
refreshed.
- The seventh day
sabbath is a sign between God, and the children of Israel FOREVER. Not this Gentile boy who’s perfect rest
is in Jesus, fulfilling this shadow of better things to come, in the N.T.
- Listen to this; Neh 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath,
and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs,
and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem
on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals. Neh 13:16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein,
which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto
the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Neh
13:17 Then I contended with
the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath
day? Neh
13:18 Did not your fathers
thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?
yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. Neh 13:19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be
dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and
charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on
the sabbath day. Neh 13:20 So the merchants and sellers of all
kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. Neh 13:21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye
about the wall? if ye do so again,
I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
- Does that remind you
of anyone today? A perfect picture
of the United States. Greedy of
filthy luchre.
- You will notice that
these commandments are in the covenant that was made with Israel. Notice the severity of breaking these
commandments. every one that
defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off
from among his people. This is the covenant ( an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. )
- What are we taught
concerning this? The Hebrew writer
says; Heb 8:6-7 KJVR But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by
how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was
established upon better promises. (7) For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
- However, I think I
see a principle here that let’s me see what God’s will is for keeping the
day we choose to take as our day of rest. Remember what the Apostle Paul told us concerning the day we take
as our sabbath? Rom 14:6 KJVR He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not
the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. Thank
God for Jesus, Who brings us the covenant of truth, and grace, and
abolishes the covenant of an eye for an eye. Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in
heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you
free.” Thank
God for the Word that comes unto us.
- But why is this an
important thought for us? Remember
what Paul told Timothy; 2Ti 3:16 KJVR All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness: We are not bound by the O.T. laws, but it does
show us what God’s will is on these matters.
(14) Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple,
and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. (15) The man
departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
HAVE YOU BELIEVED, AND RECEIVED JESUS, AND ALLOWED HIM TO
MAKE YOU WHOLE? ARE YOU ABLE TO TELL
OTHERS THAT IT WAS JESUS WHO DELIVERED YOU FROM THE BONDAGE OF SIN, MADE YOU
WHOLE AGAIN?
BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS
CHRIST, AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED. ROM.
10:9-10.
PETER SAID, “REPENT, AND BE
BAPTIZED EVERYONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE THE
GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.” RECEIVING THE
GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST IS RECEIVING ETERNAL LIFE. ACTS 2:38
PAUL SAID, “THE WAGES OF SIN IS
DEATH, BUT THE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE.” Rom. 6:23
WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE THIS
MORNING, DEATH, OR LIFE?
