I Timothy 2:8-15

Review:

1.      We are emphasizing the statement that Paul told the church at Thessalonica that he was sending Timothy to comfort, and establish their faith.  We are looking at just what Timothy had been taught that would allow him to be able to do this.

2.      We started at the beginning of the charge that Paul gave Timothy this morning.  We saw that God wants us to pray for all men, even our government leaders that are in authority, so that we may lead a quiet, and peaceable life.

3.      Then he tells Timothy that there is but one God, and one Mediator between God, and man, Christ Jesus.

4.      We elaborated on how Jesus is not only the mediator of the new covenant, but also our intercessor.

We will conclude chapter 2 this evening so let’s begin.

1Ti 2:8-15 KJVR  I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

  • Men pray everywhere.  Paul was big on prayer.  A praying church will be  a successful church.  When we are praying for the things we need to be praying for, we will not be deceived by satan into the works of the flesh, that destroys many fellowships of the Lord’s church.  The things of the flesh listed in Galatians 5.
  • A good prayer life is essential for a disciple of Christ.  Man or woman.  Jesus’ disciples ask Him to teach them to pray one time.  They told Him that John taught his disciples to pray.  That’s when He gave them the Lord’s prayer.  He even teaches us to pray for our enemies.

Jesus mentions pray 12 times in the book of Matthew;  (KJVR) Mat_5:44; Mat_6:5; Mat_6:6; Mat_6:7; Mat_6:9; Mat_9:38; Mat_14:23; Mat_19:13; Mat_24:20; Mat_26:36; Mat_26:41; Mat_26:53;  Jesus uses the word prayer four times in the book of Matthew: (KJVR) Mat_17:21; Mat_21:13; Mat_21:22; Mat_23:14;

  • Paul had told the church at Thessalonica:  1Th 5:17  Pray without ceasing.
  • Paul was always telling the churches to pray for him.  (KJVR) 1Th_5:25; 2Th_3:1; Heb_13:18;
  • Phi 4:6  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
  • James teaches us to pray;  Jam 5:13  Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.  Jam 5:14  Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
  • Peter said;  1Pe 4:7  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
  • A praying church is a victorious church.  A praying Christian is a victorious Christian.

Paul continues:

(9)  In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.  (10)  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

  • When people ask me what they should wear to church, or any where as far as that goes, I point them here, and I Peter 3.  Which says;  (1Pe 3:1 KJVR)  Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;  (1Pe 3:2 KJVR)  While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.  (1Pe 3:3 KJVR)  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;  (1Pe 3:4 KJVR)  But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  (1Pe 3:5 KJVR)  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:  (1Pe 3:6 KJVR)  Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
  • I believe this is the dress code for all Christians, not only the women.

Paul continues on:

(11)  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

  • Let me say that most women have a sincere desire to know God’s will for their lives.  They want to be pleasing to Him.  Along this path they have questions that they need answered, and Paul knows this.  So he says in another place;  1Co 14:34-36 KJVR  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.  (35)  And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.                If you will notice the Corinthians must have questioned this statement rather harshly, so Paul adds; What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?   Meaning that this is from the Lord, don’t fuss, or argue with this.
  • However, if a woman doesn’t have a husband at home she still has questions, ask Jesus to show you in the Word.  If you still are not certain ask your Pastor, or someone in the 5 fold ministry of the church;  Eph 4:11-14 KJVR  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  (12)  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  (13)  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:  (14)  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
  • Paul is saying here, don’t ask foolish, and unlearned questions in the Assembly.
  • Let me say I don’t think there is a foolish question, from a sincere heart.  Remember that.

 (12)  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

  • Paul is not a woman hater, as some have accused him of.  We have already seen how that he had great respect for Eunice, and Lois, Timothy’s Mother, and Grandmother.
  • He gives us the reason for these instructions, and it’s not for us to explain away, but to carry out.
  • What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

(13)  For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

  • We find that in the creation especially in the animal kingdom, we find the male the superior of the two.  This appears to carry on in all of God’s creation.  The male being the more dominant, and powerful.
  • Paul said this in respect to authority;  1Co 11:3  But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
  • And this teaching is continued in Icor. 15;  1Co 15:24-28 KJVR  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.  (25)  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.  (26)  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.  (27)  For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.  (28)  And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

 (14)  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

  • And what Paul is saying that a woman is more easily deceived than a man.
  • No, Adam was not deceived, he just flat disobeyed.  His love for Eve, and his not taking his stance for what God had told them, was his downfall.  DISOBEDIENCE WAS THE SIN IN THE GARDEN.  WE KNOW WHAT GOD THINKS ABOUT SACRIFICE, AND OBEDIENCE.
  • Saul, and Samuel;  1Sa 15:22 KJVR  And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

(15)  Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
