Hebrews 1:

Intro:    I use the introduction to Hebrews from Barnes commentary.

         It need not be said that this Epistle has given rise to much discussion among writers on the New Testament. Indeed there is probably no part of the Bible in regard to which so many conflicting views have been entertained. The name of the author; the time and place where the Epistle was written; the character of the book; its canonical authority; the language in which it was composed; and the persons to whom it was addressed - all have given rise to great difference of opinion. Among the causes of this are the following: - The name of the author is not mentioned. The church to which it was sent, if sent to any particular church, is not designated. There are no certain marks of time in the Epistle, as there often are in the writings of Paul, by which we can determine the time when it was written.

            And this is the Book that will tell us, “without faith it is impossible to please God,”.  We accept everything in our walk with God by faith.  Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

So let us continue our walk with God, building our faith that He will soon return for a people that have made themselves ready for His coming.  Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus!

Let us begin Hebrews chapter one;

Heb 1:1-14  God who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

  • God, the object of our worship, whom Jesus said was Spirit, Joh 4:24  God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”,
  • Spoke to the Fathers on different occasions, through the Prophets.
  •  Now who is it that could relate to this kind of language?  The Hebrews!  But now notice what the word Hebrew means;  The earliest name for Abraham (Gen_14:13) and his descendants (Joseph, Gen_39:14, Gen_39:17; Gen_40:15; Gen_41:12; Gen_43:32;
  • Another description has been;  or, as some think, from the verb עבר, ‛ābhar, “to cross over” (people from across the Euphrates;
  • God told Abraham this:  Gen 12:1-4  Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee:  (2)  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:  (3)  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.  (4)  So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
  • Now Abraham, the Hebrew, had two sons, Isaac, the son of promise, and Ishmael, the son of Hagar, Sarah’s handmaid.  Both of these sons had 12 twelve sons, and both became great in number.
  • All these people fighting in the middle east are related.  They all worship the same God.  Most of them can probably run their family tree back to Abraham.
  • This has to be one of the largest, and most fierce family feuds there has ever been.  Even bigger than our own Civil war.

NOW NOTICE:

(2)  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,

  • At Jesus’ baptism;  Mar 1:11  And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
  • And at the Mt. Of Transfiguration:  Mat 17:5  While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
  • They had just seen Moses, and Elijah, and God could have said, “Listen to what Moses has to say, he is the lawgiver.”  But He didn’t, He said concerning Jesus, “this is My beloved Son, HEAR YE HIM.”

whom he hath appointed heir of all things,

  • Listen to this;  Rom 8:17  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
  • And this;  1Co 15:24-28  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.  (25)  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.  (26)  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.  (27)  For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.  (28)  And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

by whom also he made the worlds;

  • Paul tells us;  Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

(3)  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;  (4)  Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.  (5)  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, ( Psa. 2:7 )Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee?

And again,  “ I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?”  (6)  And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.  (7)  And of the angels he saith, ( Psa. 104:4 ) Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.  (8)  But unto the Son he saith, ( Psa. 45:6-7 )Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.  (9)  Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

  • God is showing us how much more power, glory, honor, and authority the Son has over the Angels.

(10)  ( 102:25-27 ) And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:  (11)  They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;  (12)  And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

  • Peter gives a very strong warning concerning the cleansing of the world;  2Pe 3:7-14  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.  (8)  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  (9)  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  (10)  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  (11)  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,  (12)  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  (13)  Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.  (14)  Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

(13)  But to which of the angels said he at any time, ( Psa. 110:1 )  Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

·          ANGEL = The word angel is applied in Scripture to an order of supernatural or heavenly beings whose business it is to act as God's messengers to men, and as agents who carry out His will.

THEN THE WRITER ASKS THE QUESTION,

(14)  Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

  • Abraham, Daniel, many of the Prophets, Jesus said He could’ve called 10,000 angels.

Are we in tune with God enough to recognize if He would send us an Angel to help us in a time of need?

JESUS CHRIST, THE SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND FOREVER.  AMEN.
