April 6, 2008 Review of the charges
that Paul gave Timothy.
CHAPTER ONE:
PAST CHARGE TO
TIMOTHY:
1Ti 1:3-11 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into
Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other
doctrine, (4) Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which
minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
·
Teach no other doctrine.
·
Give heed to nothing except that which is in
faith. Rom. 10:17.
(5) Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: (6) From which some
having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; (7) Desiring to be
teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they
affirm. (8) But we know that the law is good, if a man use it
lawfully;
·
What is using it lawfully? AGAIN; what is written in the Word of God. Our faith.
·
It is not being used lawfully when false teachers
try to bring guilt on someone who is not keeping the whole law.
NOW NOTICE:
(9) Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the
lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and
profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for
manslayers, (10) For whoremongers, for them that defile
themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and
if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; (11) According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed
to my trust.
· Did you notice that all the things mentioned were to mankind, and not to God. These are good sound laws. Laws that are needed even under the New Testament covenant.
FIRST CHARGE TO TIMOTHY:
Chapter one, verse 18; 1Ti
1:18 This charge I commit unto
thee, son Timothy,
And this charge Paul is referring to is
back in verse 8,- 11; Using
the law, lawfully, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which
was committed to Paul’s trust.
Paul goes on and teaches Timothy God’s will
concerning;
· Prayer in public worship. · Women in public worship. · The qualifications of Bishops, Deacons, and their Wives.
SECOND CHARGE:
Conducting yourself in the house of God.
1Ti 3:14-15 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: (15) But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to
behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God,
the pillar and ground of the truth.
·
He agrees that great is the mystery of Godliness.
In chapter 4, Paul teaches Timothy:
·
The description of
false teachers.
1Ti 4:1-5 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some
shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of
devils; (2) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a
hot iron; (3) Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from
meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which
believe and know the truth. (4) For every creature of God is good,
and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: (5) For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
·
The eating of certain meats was one way that
false teachers corrupted the laws of God for the N.T.
·
It was very important for the O.T. to show
obedience, and for health reasons, but Paul is teaching us that it is not for
the N.T. covenant.
·
Instructions for the
true teacher.
1Ti 4:6-10 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou
shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith
and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. (7) But refuse profane
and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. (8) For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto
all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to
come. (9) This is a faithful saying and worthy of all
acceptation. (10) For therefore we both labor and suffer
reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men,
especially of those that believe.
THE THIRD CHARGE:
NOTICE:
·
1Ti 4:11-16 These things command and teach.
·
(12) Let
no man despise thy youth;
·
but be thou an example of the believers, in word,
in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
·
(13) Till
I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
·
(14) Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy,
with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
·
(15) Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy
profiting may appear to all.
·
(16) Take
heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this
thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
PAUL GOES ON:
·
How to treat all people.
·
How to treat widows, and elders.
FOURTH CHARGE:
1Ti 5:21 I charge thee before God, and the
Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without
preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
THIS MORNING WE LOOKED AT:
·
How servants are to act, and respond to their
masters. How masters are to treat their
slaves.
·
Exhortation to Godliness with contentment. Learn to be satisfied in whatever condition
you are in
·
Exhortation to the rich.
THE FIFTH CHARGE:
1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
I SUM THIS LETTER UP BY SAYING “I RECEIVE THE CHARGE FROM GOD, TO TEACH NONE OTHER GOSPEL THAN THAT WHICH WE HAVE RECEIVED IN THE BIBLE.” MAY GOD BE TRUE, AND EVERY MAN A LIAR. ( ROM. 3:4 ) |
